Products or Tools You’ll Need
- Microwave-safe container
- Water – 1 cup
- Baking soda – ½ a teaspoon
- Microfiber clot
- Wet-vacuum – if you don’t have one, we recommend the Black and Decker portable wet vac for small jobs
- You can also substitute a wet vac with paper towels
Step 1: Heat water in microwave safe cup to boiling point
Heat water in microwave safe cup to boiling point.
As soon as the water starts boiling, remove it from the microwave and allow it to sit for 30 seconds. Lightly saturate the surface where the spot is at. DO NOT pour the whole cup on the spot, as it will cause the water to sink deep into your cushion and make it harder to remove.
Hot water helps break down and dilute the liquid to make it easier to extract from the couch.
Step 2: Apply the baking soda to the spot and use the microfiber cloth to scrub it in
Baking soda is a natural cleaner assistant that helps in a couple of areas. One, it helps break down organic matter from coffee, juice or pet urine. Two, it acts as a safe scrubbing agent to remove tough stains on a micro level, similar to BORAX.
With your microfiber cloth, gently scrub the baking soda in circular patterns for about 30 seconds
Step 3: Extract the Liquid from the Upholstery
Now that your stain has been loosened up with hot water and baking soda, it’s time to start extracting it. To effectively do this, you’ll need to follow the steps below multiple times until the stain is gone:
Step 1 – Use your wet vac (or paper towels) to press into the upholstery and remove the liquid. If you’re using paper towels, you may need several squares. Continue this until the spot isn’t so damp.
Step 2 – For tougher stains, add a little hot water to the area and repeat step 1.
Most people will treat and scrub their stains but fail to extract it once it’s been broken down. The key to removing stains successfully is by scrubbing and sucking the mess out.
If you’re having difficulty removing the stain, it could be because the liquid form has had too much time to sit and feature or sink too deep into the furniture to be extracted using paper towels or a small wet vac.
For situations like these, or to clean the entire surface of your upholstery furniture, we recommend using a professional upholstery cleaning service like ours. The turnaround time is quick and we always provide free quotes.
